What a fascinating garph! What caused the dip in 1917 and why a reversal from 1980 onwards?

I can’t really explain the 1917 dip, but re 1980+ I would surmise that deregulation, Thatcher-Reagan-Neoliberalism and a growing market fundamentalism played a decisive role.

Yes, I think you might be right about the 1980+. The earlier data points could make an interesting study though. Thanks very much for posting this.
